The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have announced their support for the upcoming Philippine Blockchain Week (PBW) this year. The event is set to take place from September 19-21, 2023, at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport World Resorts, Manila, Philippines.
At the conference, it was discussed by DICT Director Emmy Lou Delfin and DTI Director Jo-Dann Darong how this event will assist the government in achieving its commitment to boosting collaboration, innovation, and digitization in the country.
According to recent data, a significant number of Filipinos are involved in cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which, as said by Blockchain Council of the Philippines (BCP) Founding president and Philippine Blockchain Week lead Convenor Dr. Donald Lim, shows the country’s potential to become a global blockchain capital. The event is expected to attract thousands of attendees from various industries and regions, bringing together influential leaders in the blockchain and crypto sectors.
The theme for this year’s Philippine Blockchain Week is ‘BRKOUT’, encouraging participants to break free from traditional norms and embrace new opportunities in the blockchain space. The event will feature discussions on blockchain, fintech, the metaverse, regulation, Artificial Intelligence, privacy, and DeFi, among other topics.
As said by Dir Delfin, the DICT will lead Blockchain 101, an educational initiative aimed at informing students about blockchain industry opportunities. They will also organize focus group discussions for government officials to promote the use of blockchain technology for storing government data. In addition, DTI Dir. Darong expressed its support for integrating blockchain technology into various industries saying “At DTI, we promise to support all initiatives that will gear towards the attainment of the vision of making the Philippines not just innovative and creative, but more competitive through blockchain”.
Lining up with the department’s vision for the inaugural celebration of the Philippine Creative Industry Month in September, Darong shared that the Philippine Blockchain Week serves as a great venue for pursuing creativity and innovation.
Securing government support and collaboration would also be an important help in blockchain adoption and innovations in the country, said Lim. “Government intervention and support have always been critical for the adoption of blockchain technology in any country. For the Philippines, our government’s broad-minded stance will be instrumental in positioning us to become the blockchain capital of Asia” he added.
Other than the government’s support and partnership, the organizers have also announced a partnership with renowned fashion designer Michael Cinco, who will collaborate with PBW to showcase the merging of fashion and the metaverse. Additionally, there will be a VC-startup matchmaking event with CNN Philippines’ business reality show, “The Final Pitch”, a gaming expo with Tier One Entertainment, and the live announcement of finalists for the NFTY Awards, which was created by Tech Entrepreneur/Investor Chris J Snook and E! Entertainment Founder Larry Namer.
The Philippine Block Awards will also return to recognize individuals and organizations supporting blockchain adoption in the country.
