OpenWengo is offering free PC-to-PC calls, video and chat. It’s released as open source for easy enhancement by savvy developers. The product is offered by a French virtual telco called “Wengo.”
Wengo’s business model is through connections to the public phone netwok (PSTN) and GSM network, the way SkypeIn and SkypeOut are paid services. While OpenWengo is not yet as famous – and not as disruptive – as Skype, its advantage is that its owner already has existing agreements with carriers and can buy call minutes in bulk. I hope this becomes another feasible way for people abroad to call their relatives back home on their land or cellphone lines, on the cheap.
