Moving beyond the fingerprint reader-on-the-back layout, Vivo might come out of 2017 as the first smartphone brand with the in-display fingerprint reader.
Synaptics announced that 2018 will act as the year that in-display fingerprint readers will come into fruition. Not only that, but the feature already entered mass production for a ‘top five OEM’. Going off of that, we do know that Vivo will be part of the first top five OEM that will have the sensor. While we don’t know the exact name of the devices that will tout this tech, we know the fingerprint sensor name. Synaptics named this in-display sensor ‘Clear ID FS9500’.
How does it work? Users will see an image of a fingerprint on the screen when they wake up the phone. Then, it will disappear after the user inputs their fingerprint. Additionally, the in-display sensor will only activate when needed, thus maximizing battery life.
This development feels interesting since some phone brands already moved away from fingerprint ID. Instead, some already opt for retinal scans, or even face scans for security. However, this seems like proof that fingerprint security still commands interest from the market.
