Over the past few years, new names have been popping up in the smartphone market. What used to be Nokia and Motorola in the early 2000s, are now Huawei and Oppo to name a couple. Of course these brands have the products to back it up. We will be looking at one of them now. This is the Huawei GR5 2017 unboxing and initial review.
Huawei GR5 Unboxing – What’s Inside?
The Huawei GR5 2017 comes with the usual and a bit more. So, it has the travel charger, the micro USB cable, and a headset. But, it also comes with a screen protector and body case. The packaging of this device is pretty impressive, the box is wider than most so it feels like you are getting more than usual with your unit. I also liked how each accessory had their own box, like the headset was separate from the charger and all that. Those little things makes you feel like you are opening something special especially when phones at this price point tend to have generic packaging.
We’ve checked the box we now look at the phone itself. The unit we have is a champagne gold one, and as it suggests it looks fancy. The glossy white front frame holds the 5.5 inch FHD display and the 8MP front camera. At the back it is metallic and sports two cameras (12MP and 2MP), a fingerprint sensor, and a flash. Around the body, you will find the sim tray on the left side while the lock screen and volume control on the left. The top of the phone has the audio jack and at the bottom is the USB port and speakers.
Huawei GR5 2017 Unboxing – First Impressions
Going back to how the phone physically looks, I like it. Simple but has a touch of elegance to it. In terms of arrangement I like the idea of the speakers being on the bottom of the phone, it’s closer to the user and in my experience gets less obstructions. Also, this phone does not have any physical buttons below the display, in their place is the Huawei branding. As much as I would rather have actual buttons, I can at least appreciate the fact that the certain section of the phone is not empty. Some smartphones just have thick bezels underneath their screens and then the pop up buttons are difficult to work with. That kind of design really just takes away from a quality smartphone experience.
Fortunately, that is not the case with the Huawei GR5 2017. The phone is very responsive that it is easy to access the home, menu, and back buttons. Having the GR5 2017 in hand is also pretty good, even if it is a bit heavy, the smoothness of the back panel makes up for it a bit. The rounded edges also help it be a comfortable unit to hold.
Under the hood this phone looks pretty good. It is powered with an impressive HiSilicon Kirin 2.1 GHz octa-core processor, matched with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM. This is slightly better than some phones at the same price point as they usually sport 1.5 GHz processors. It also runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but adds more to it with its custom UI the EMUI 4.1. So far going through this phone feels seamless and fluid. Priced at Php 13,990, the Huawei GR5 2017 looks pretty good from the outside and the spec sheet. But, for the full verdict, tune in to our full review coming soon.
