Starmobile Play Five Review – Perfect for the Tight Budget?

Measuring at a measly 4-inches, the Starmobile Play Five might just be the smallest smartphone I’ve ever unboxed.

Upon opening the box for the Starmobile Play Five, you’ll get:

  • Starmobile PLAY Five (1 pc)
  • Travel Charger (1 pc)
  • Micro USB Cable (1 pc)
  • 1,500 mAh Li-Ion Battery (1 pc)
  • Headset (earphones) (1 pc)
  • Quick Start Card (1 pc)
  • Warranty Card (1 pc)

The first thing I noticed the moment I opened the box was ‘This is REALLY SMALL’.  As in , the screen is so small that the phone can’t produce HD, only offering a resolution of 480 x 854. It also feels cheaper, mainly because the material has the texture of a lightweight plastic toy.  Fortunately, the back’s plastic finish seems a lot more pleasing to the eyes.

Speaking of the back, that’s where we’ll find the rear camera, its flash, and two small slits that act as the speakers. Additionally, as with most Starmobile models, the audio jack and Micro USB port situated themselves at the top of the phone. Three buttons situate themselves at the bottom black bezel, namely the home button, back button, and the button that allows the phone to display which apps are running.

The Play Five runs on a 1.2GHz Quad Core ARM Cortex-A7 processor.  Furthermore, it has 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM, expandable to 32GB. To top these off, a 5MP rear camera with flash and 2MP front camera come with this device. Obviously, the Play Five wasn’t meant to be a top notch photography phone, but rather, act as a budget gadget. Thus, the low megapixels of the cameras could be forgiven.

All-in-all, I’m not quite sure yet of what to make of the Play Five.  It’s certainly one of the most affordable smartphones out there (at PHP 1,790), and one of the lightest to hold, at only 117 grams. But the verdict’s still out on whether the lower-end specs are worth paying for.

Tune in to the blog for our upcoming full review of the Starmobile Play Five!
