RED, a brand that specializes in making digital cameras, enters the smartphone market with the upcoming RED Hydrogen One.
The Hydrogen One, an unlocked Android smartphone, will most likely gain a price tag that easily goes over USD 1,000 (around PHP 50,000). But what kind of smartphone would command such a price? According to the press release, the Hydrogen One will come with a 5.7-inch display that supports 2D, 3D, AR, VR, and mixed reality. Not only that, but the phone will be able to play and create .h4v files which accommodate 4-view media.
RED will also make the phone modular. In fact, part of the Hydrogen build is a special data connector that allows for external add-ons. No word yet on exact attachables that will be introduced.
Obviously, such claims should be taken with a grain of salt. RED may be promising the future of smartphones, but no evidence points to any of it being valid. Of course, the RED brand carries a strong pedigree in imaging and film so we can expect some sort of buzz. For now, we can only hope for further clarity on what we know so far.
