Hyperkin has announced that they are developing a real, functional Game Boy add-on for Android called the Smart Boy, which will allow Android smartphones to play actual Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. Tentatively priced at USD60 (or Php 2,777) and releasing on December 1, 2016, the Smart Boy will be sold as a Development Kit, with Hyperkin hoping that consumers will improve and work on the source code themselves. Unfortunately, Apple users are out of luck as the company has yet to announce a version for the iOS. No word yet for a local Philippine launch or release for the Smart Boy.
Features for the Smart Boy include an open source serial app and firmware, compatibility Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, a button set patterned after the original Nintendo Game Boy, and a double-sided micro USB port. The Smart Boy will accommodate phones anywhere between 5 to 6 inches in size, and will need the 4.4.4 Android KitKat OTG as the minimum OS requirement.
