The highly-anticipated sequel to the 2009 battle between Dave’s cute plants and an army of cute zombies is finally here. Plants vs Zombies 2 by Popcap Games is now available on the iOS platform and the good thing is it’s free.
Actually, the game went into a soft-release for App Store customers from Australia and New Zealand last July 9 to get some testing done especially on their servers. Now, Plants vs Zombies 2 is available for the iPhone 4 and above, iPod touch 4th gen and above, iPad 2 and above, and the iPad mini, running on at least iOS 5.1.
The game now offers new mechanics aside from a bunch of new plants and zombies. There are now various worlds (Ancient Egypt, Pirate Seas, and Wild West) you have to explore, each with varying types of zombies. Each plant also gets a super attack when you feed it plant food which you can get from killing zombies. You can also get into the heat of the battle yourself by invoking godlike powers in exchange for in-game coins so you can toss zombies or electrocute them using finger gestures. Oh yeah, look out for the Yeti.
I’ve been playing the game since last month and I enjoyed how stages are now replayable by completing different challenges in varying difficulty such as using only 10 plants, or having a set amount of sun to finish a stage, etc. The game just got deeper without sacrificing the fun aspect and relatively simply gameplay.
Of course you can make the game a tiny bit easier by paying for in-app purchases. Want more plant food? Keys to unlock side stages? Want a plant earlier than you could get them? You have to pay but playing it for free still makes the game enjoyable and even a bit challenging.
So what are you waiting for, go get Plants vs Zombies 2 from the App Store now. EA and Popcap Games has not announced when they will bring it to the PC or Android.
