Philippine Cyberspace is turning 20 in 2006

With all the talk about 3G, WiFi/WiMax and Web 2.0, it’s hard to believe that 20 years ago, the fastest you can connect was 300 bits per second. Yes, bits not bytes.

Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) on dialup started in August 1986. Ten years ago, 1996, I thought of putting up a site called “Dekada” to commemorate the tenth anniversary. Since the site is no longer around, it’s a good thing the Internet Archive has preserved the contents.

Here is the conversation from an old ph-isp mailing list. I’m not surprised if you don’t understand the 20-year old jargon. I’m sure some of you never even used dialup Internet!

Hoy! 🙂 I only started in BBS scene in 1993, and lasted til 1995. I was 12 years old in 1986, and didn’t even have a computer back then.

when did the internet really start here? like the first publically available ISP?
I was on PrimeNet i think in 1995? They became PacificNet i think. Also used CyberNet

It started with PHnet in 1994. Yes, Primeworld Digital Systems became the local Pacific Internet.
Cybernet Live is a… interesting story too.

nuong panahon na andito pa ang mga kano sa subic at clark eh meron nang connection to international fidonet exchange. the gateway were run by the people from clark/subic.

i remember Billboard run by Bill English.

But noong nawala na sila, ayun, wala nang fidonet feeds.

There’s also a philippine developed BBS software called Andromeda.

Then there’s this file hog haven called scan international run by eddie manalo, 24 hours running on 2 dedicated dialup lines.

In fact there was a virus before that was dedicated to Eddie Manalo, just forgot the virus.

Text based BBS lang lahat. Malupit ka na pag naka RIP ka. This uses vector graphics.

BBS animations were done using ANSI. Yes the ANSI.SYS that you see in config.sys if you were old enough to witness it.

I used to run a bbs called TRACi BBS running on a 386 machine with 14.4k which has a freenet address of 63:101/5 if I remember it correctly.

Got the TRACi name from our thesis which is called TRACeable Ideas. We created a hypertext creator and hypertext presentor. Later on we found out that somebody else is doing something similar and they called it HTML.

Among the people who logged that I remember was JonJon Gumba from Adamson who was the creator of Posessed Virus, I think pati si Migs Paraz naglogin na rin sa TRACi.

Part of our group was Xenos (Eric Pareja) of Aliens Alcove, James Yanong of Down South, Desiree, Neil Quioge, a mac BBS run by (i forgot his name), at marami pang iba na di ko na matandaan.

Afterwhich, PH-Net was born and we were able to get a taste of internet in UP. We were able to get one of the first copies of linux in the philippines from a UP friend of mine (Rommel Ferria). We were downloading from the internet into 1.44 floppies using command line ftp.

aba! BBS! I remember the days tuloy na i’d often go to sleep late waiting for this board’s line to be free, then I’d download files from it at very very slow speed but still it felt like I was connected, and ’twas good.

Livewire Manila, The File Bank, Hollywood BBS and the frequently updated list of Joel Mique, ahh the good ol days. Bluewave as your mail reader, atdp and the set of at commands was your bestfriend.

Happy anniversary Philippine Internet! It’s good to have seen the start and still be a part of it ’till now!

1986, I was 12, J. Angelo was 6… so doble edad ko noon. di na ngayon. di ka ba marunong mag math? 😉

Noel: Ah so you’re the same Noel Bautista.. yeah I guess I logged in, I was trying to login everywhere. In Freenet, I think I was logging into UP BBS the most. Fidonet… I can’t remember but it was pretty available.

Jerry Dy of the Midnight Callers BBS, who wrote an offline mail reader (OMR), became my classmate in AdMU CS (batch 95).

For a few months, I was a sysop of a programmer’s BBS on Fidonet, Philsoft. It was hosted by a Lopez company at the Benpres building, First Philippine Software. I think the company is defunct.

I tried yung student bbs via telnet..Wow, I remember the old days. I also used Maximus, Squish for mail, and Frontdoor. 🙂

The IP that you are acquiring as of the moment may not be your IP address after a number of days or weeks. Additionally, the IP address you are acquiring right now will be assigned by the DHCP server to other subscribers of MyDestiny Internet once you have a acquired a different IP. There will be a problem if a person tries to access your old IP as security of the current IP leaser may be compromised.

The ports you mentioned are open on Corporate accounts as a fixed IP (although still DHCP) is being provided for them.

= 1.1MB/s
= 1.1 x 8 Mb/s
= 8.8Mbps
但我的上载只能是50kbp和下载只能295kbp这就是pccw的8m网速吗？在查询时还慌称没有锁port，装完现在才说有锁port80，这样的坑骗公司还能在香港生存就因为香港人是肥羊，要任维有钱人宰割？我现在的心情如同下面的人心同感受，就因没有早看到他的忠告。请问你们有哪个port是不会有病毒和受到骇客攻击的呢？哪个port没有漏洞的呢？
我以香港人为傲，误认为在香港能享用高速无限的宽频，但却得到比菲律宾的2m还要澜的网速，真叫人心寒。我的向世人告白一下，以后要装宽频，除非全都关了再也别进pccw这毒澜的骗局里啦。
