Lenovo Y510p Gaming Laptop Review
Launched fourth quarter of last year, the Lenovo IdeadPad Y510p is one of the best gaming laptops available today, featuring a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ processor, 8 GB memory and an NVIDIA GeForce GT755M 2GB graphics card. We managed to get our hands on the Y510p, using it as our daily laptop for surfing, watching videos and gaming over the past few days. Check out how this high-performance gaming and multimedia laptop performed on our review below.
Design
The Lenovo Y510p turns head with its gorgeous brushed metal back and bottom cover. On the inside, it uses a plastic bezel on the display while retaining the metal components on the palm rest and areas surrounding the keyboard. At 5.95 pounds, the Y510p is hefty. Although it has the same 15.6 inch display as the ThinkPad enterprise laptops, it is noticeably larger due to the wider bezels, bigger touchpad and more spacious palm rest and speaker area.
On top of the display, you’ll find the integrated camera capable of recording 720p HD videos. On its sides are two built-in microphones. The Y510p has a chiclet-style keyboard which includes a numeric keypad. The red backlit keyboard is a knockout. On the upper part of the keyboard are the JBL speakers and the power button and just below is the one piece touchpad.
The Lenovo Y510p delivers sharp, bright and colorful images although the glossy display is prone to glaring especially when used on open space. The JBL speakers provides clear and loud sound perfect for multimedia and gaming. Its speakers also supports Dolby Home Theatre v4 further enhancing the already impressive audio.
The left side of the Y510p houses the Novo button used for Lenovo OneKey Recovery System / BIOS / boot menu. Alongside are the AC power adapter, ventilation slot, VGA port, RJ-45 port, HDMI port and two blue USB 3.0 ports.
On the other side of the laptop are the Headphone and Microphone jack and a yellow USB 2.0 port. The USB 2.0 port also features a USB-always-on function that allows charging of USB devices even when the laptop is turned off. Beside is the Ultrabay which provides users the option of plugging in a removable optical disc drive, graphics card, HDD or fan. Lenovo has also provided a Kensington lock slot for added protection.
In front of the Y510p are the power, battery, touchpad, caps lock, and numlock indicators. Next to it is a memory card slot.
At the bottom of the laptop are the battery pack, battery pack latch, module lock and louvers for cooling. The sides and bottom of the Y510p gets hot at times because of the heat being dispersed especially when using the laptop for a number of hours straight.
The Lenovo Y510p uses Windows 8.1 bringing and improved performance and more customization options. The Y510p also comes pre-installed with Lenovo OneKey Recovery backup and recovery, Lenovo VeriFace, Lenovo YouCam, Lenovo PowerDVD 10 and Lenovo Cloud Storage / SugarSync.

The Lenovo Y510p performed impressively and handled our everyday tasks smoothly – surfing the web, watching videos and playing our favorite PC games including NBA 2k14, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and Diablo II ROS without running into any issues.
