Leading global technology brand, Honor, is set to launch its innovative AI Eye Tracking feature, which will enable users to interact with their smartphones using just their eyes. This groundbreaking technology will be available on HONOR’s MagicOS 8.0 operating system and will be rolled out to global devices starting from 27th August 2024.
The AI Eye Tracking feature is a significant step forward in making technology more accessible to people with reduced mobility, particularly those with conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and eventually paralysis. In the later stages of the disease, individuals often retain control only of their eye movement, making it challenging to interact with devices like smartphones and computers.
HONOR’s AI Eye Tracking feature addresses this challenge by using artificial intelligence to track the user’s eye movements and translate them into commands. This allows users to perform various actions on their smartphones, such as opening notifications, launching apps, and scrolling through content, simply by moving their eyes.
In addition to the AI Eye Tracking feature, HONOR is also investing in research and development of non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies. BCI technologies allow people to communicate with external devices using brain electrical signals, creating even more possibilities for people with disabilities.
HONOR’s commitment to empowering people with disabilities is also reflected in its #HONORtheChallenger social media campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about ALS and pay tribute to the individuals who live with the disease. The campaign features a short film produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, which tells the powerful story of artist and ALS challenger Bernard Muller. The film demonstrates how Bernard Muller uses eye-tracking technology to express himself through artwork, demonstrating the power of AI in making life more enjoyable for people living with disabilities.
“ALS is a degenerative illness of the nerve cells that causes your muscles to gradually fail,” says ALS Foundation Netherlands executive director Limore Noach. “Every loss of function is permanent,” she states, noting that in the final stages of the illness, ALS patients frequently only have control over their eye movements. “Those who receive a life-altering diagnosis frequently experience a revitalized sense of purpose and a desire to accomplish something worthwhile.”
HONOR’s AI Eye Tracking feature is a significant step forward in making technology more accessible and inclusive. The feature will empower people with reduced mobility to interact with their smartphones more easily, enabling them to stay connected and engaged with the world around them.
