A team of researchers from the University College London (UCL) achieved the fastest ever data rate for digital information at 1.125 Tb/s.
The researchers are members of the Optical Network Group, who are studying the capacity limits of optical transmission systems, designed to address the growing demand for fast data rates.
The lead researcher, Dr Robert Maher, says that they are currently “working with sophisticated equipment in our lab to design the next generation core networking and communications systems that can handle data signals at rates in excess of 1 terabit per second (Tb/s)”.
To make it easier for us mortals to understand (especially that high-speed data is sometimes an alien concept to us here in Philippines), Dr. Maher says that the data they achieved can actually download the whole HBO Game of Thrones Series in just one second…and that’s in HD!
Meanwhile, the average internet speed in the Philippines is at 2.5 megabits per second (mbps).
