For 11 years Club Penguin has been powered by Disney to give kids a safe and friendly social media experience. Originally Launched in 2005, Disney bought the site a couple of years after and did its best to develop it into a safe platform for kids to play and chat online. However, the site will be shut down by the end of March.
To replace it Disney will launch a more modern version of Club Penguin as a mobile application. Club Penguin Island will launch on march 29. It is set to bring the same idea of providing kids with a safe social media experience on the mobile platform. It will feature new games and quests and other new innovations for better engagement.
Sadly memberships and virtual items won’t be carried over from the site. However, Disney is offering pre registration so that future users can reserve their usernames.
It has been reported that from 2013 when Club Penguin peaked at around 12 million users the site has been on a decline. Reaching only about 5.5 monthly visitors last month, the launch of the app hopes to revitalize Club Penguin. Disney will be competing head to head with the Lego Life social network for the under-13 demographic.
