Ever find the need to control your windows-based computer remotely, but you just can’t access via the usual remote-desktop tools like VNC or even Microsoft’s own Terminal Services because your machine is running under a firewall?
You have the option of using web-based interfaces that allow you to control a remote PC via a web-browser, and the two more popular services are GoToMyPC and LogMeIn. GotoMyPC has been around for quite some time now, but the only limitation is that the “free” version lasts only for 30 days (and requires you to input credit card details).
LogMeIn, on the other hand, offers a scaled-down free edition that still features full remote-control functionality. The “pro” version offers more features, but the free edition is good enough for me.
It’s secure, it’s easy to use, it just plain works!
I’m currently using LogMeIn to control a PC running within a firewall, and it works like a charm! Try it out.

“It’s secure, it’s easy to use, it just plain works!” — How secure is it?
It uses SSL from moment one. If you type in the web address as http://www.logmein.com it will automagicaly redirect you to an https site using SSL. From there, once you have connected depending on the handshake and connection from the client PC to the remote PC the encryption rate will either be 128bit or 256bit. By far, more than enough security for even the biggest security buffs.
secure? doubt it. ssl doesnt really make you connection secure. it just encrypts whatever you are sending over the network. the encryption it uses can be reversed using a commno algo w/c of course can be found with a little googling, how secure are you connecting to it if the pc you are using to connect to a remote computer is being arp-poisoined? keylogger? cookie stealer etc. we can only define the word “SECURE” if one can find a patch to human stupidity.
peace!

I have used LOGMEIN web service to support clients remotely and for free and I was impressed. I was using CITRIX, PC Anywhere and Microsoft’s Terminal Services and Remote Desktop before but I see LOGMEIN as the best solution for this. Scalable, Deployable in just a few clicks and basically accessble anywhere. The connection is fast as if you are just actually doing remote access on the other side of the office wall.
Whether you are a frequent IT traveler or simply someone who has to support so may clients all at once anytime and anywhere, this solution bridges the gap of cost, geography and technology thereby increasing client satisfaction, delivery and productivity not just double but almost thrice.
SO far, I have not seen any issue and the cost for availing the PRO version is reasonable and billable monthly or yearly but for me, the FREE version fits my current needs still. This software or rather service is one of the best!
