Update: Here’s the latest Cherry Mobile Magnum S Octa Core Android 4.4 KitKat smartphone.
The Cherry Mobile Magnum 2X is the most affordable dual-core processor in the market today. With a price of P15,899, it’s even cheaper than a lot of 1GHz single-core phones out there.
We have one for review right now so let me just show you what you can get out of the box as well as my first impressions about this most powerful phone Cherry Mobile has to offer.
Nothing fancy with the packaging of this phone.
What’s unusual is the “œApple-sque” accessories included which doesn’t really match the phone. You’ll get white earphones that looked like it came from the iPod. Oh it’s also a hands-free set too. There’s also the USB cable and the separate white USB power adapter which is really nice since you can also use it to plug other USB cables (iPod USB perhaps?).
Unfortunately, there’s no microSD card included in the package but we were told that a 4GB microSD comes free with this phone so better ask for that from the shop where you will be buying it from.
First Impressions
The size of the Magnum 2X somewhat reminds me of the HTC Desire S. The size is a bit on the chunky side because of the curved back but is more easy to handle compared to the wider Cherry Mobile Magnum HD. The 3.8-inch LCD screen is not that bright especially under the sun but still looks good and has deep contrast. The screen is smaller but icons appear sharper than that of the Magnum HD.
The back is too curved and that it won’t sit still on a surface. A slight nudge will make it spin and eventually wear out the center of the back panel. The back panel is made up of solid metal but with a subdued matte finish (slippery) unlike the brushed finish of the Magnum HD. I would get a case for this one ASAP as it looks prone to scratches and to stop it from spinning if you’re using it while it’s flat on its back.
Haven’t really used it much but will definitely give you a more in-depth review as I use it some more. We’ll see how Froyo fares on this phone since it wasn’t a good experience with the Magnum HD.
Oh yeah for those who are asking, the battery here is rated at 1500mAh so it’s in the lower spectrum of batteries on dual-core phones. It’s also nice for Cherry Mobile to include some useful utility apps such as Data traffic manager, App manager and a unit converter.
The Settings UI will remind you of Sony Ericsson Android phones. Hehehe.

ahh really? maybe it does. i couldn’t really test. hahaha but im using it without any casing and putting it in my pocket along with my keys and coins. wala pa namang gasgas. i’ll ask cherry mobile if they know.
okey, we’ll wait for your feedback regarding it… thanks a lot……..
looks nice ha. parang hindi mukhang cherry mobile. will wait for your review sir kung sulit to sa presyo.
Looks nice and talagang lumelevel na ang cherry mobile when it comes to smartphone’s. Well this is the most cheapest dual core smartphone now in the market so far.
this phone is a re branded, this phone was made by aliyun group(china)you can find aliyun 700 phone in google.
thanks for this info krish!
the original version was developed by K-Touch and was called W700. Aliyun now sells the phone with its Yun OS.
since K-Touch doesnt care about the software of the phone anymore, i really hope any Magnum 2X/Macromax A85 can do a android 2.3 rom.
I have three questions:
1. How many RAM does this have? (I wish it has at least 768mb)
2. Can this phone be rooted?
3. Are there developers supporting this phone for any custom ROMs? That can be a very big advantage for this phone especially it has a Tegra 2 processor.
* It’s ok for me if this phone doesn’t have any flash to help the camera in low light situation but if the software and the more important hardware(eg. Processor, RAM, Screen, Three-axis accelerometer) is missing then it’s a bad device.
Thanks.
if you look at the specs table it says there 512mb ram.
any phone can be rooted but the problem is this is not a popular phone for developers to waste their time rooting/customizing.
