With the EOS R launch just last year, Canon continues its big reveal this 2019 with the introduction of its second full-frame mirrorless camera: Canon EOS RP. Its key features include a 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, 4K and Full HD video, and DIGIC 8 processing engine. Here’s the rundown of the camera that’s dubbed by many as the “Full Frame for the Masses”.
Canon EOS RP’s unique selling point banks on its portability—it’s the lightest and smallest full-frame EOS camera to date. It has a decent size grip and users can incorporate the Extension Grip EG-E1 in black, blue, or red adapter that mounts on the camera base. The camera’s framework is made from magnesium alloy, both water and moisture resistant and feels lighter than it looks when held in the palm.
The viewfinder sports a 0.39-inches finder with 2.36 million-dot panel that boasts 100% frame coverage while its 3-inches LCD monitor with 1.04 million-dot resolution provides good detail when captured images are magnified.
Captured images take on rich detail and great color; its full frame capacity does an excellent job in capturing photos in broad dynamic range. For video capture and stills photography, Canon EOS RP offers 4k-resolution clips at 25fps while Full HD resolution clips run up to 60fps.
The Digic 8 processor lends improvement in low-light situations, adding detail in shadows. The face-tracking with Eye AF works in both single and continuous mode, ideal for capturing fast moving subjects. Canon claims one can film up to 98 shots of Raw + Large JPEGs or 170 shots of C-Raw + Large JPEGs due to its seamless buffer and can manage up to 250 shots in full-charge setting.
