If you’re paranoid about the government and other entities snooping on your calls, emails, SMS and mobile data then this phone’s just for you.

Silent Circle, an encrypted communications company and Spanish mobile phone maker Geeksphone has just announced the Blackphone.

Designed and built by cryptographers and security experts, the Blackphone brings more privacy, control and security to the mobile phone.  The Blackphone allows users to make and receive secure calls, SMS, files and video chat.

The Blackphone uses PrivatOS, a customized Android OS that allows transfer of encrypted messages and adds an extra level of privacy and security on the native Android OS.  The guys from Silent Circle and Geeksphone announced that they have embedded privacy on the entirety of the Blackphone from hardware to operating system, to the apps running on the smartphone.

No pricing and launch date has been announced but the Blackphone will be featured at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on Feb 24 wherein pre-orders will be accepted.

Here is a description of the Blackphone from their website

Blackphone is unlocked and works with any GSM carrier. Performance benchmarks put it among the top performers from any manufacturer.

It has the features necessary to do all the things you need, as well as all the things you want, while maintaining your privacy and security and giving you the freedom to choose your carrier, your apps, and your location.

The tools installed on Blackphone give you everything you need to take ownership of your mobile presence and digital footprints, and ensure nobody else can watch you without your knowledge.

You can make and receive secure phone calls; exchange secure texts; exchange and store secure files; have secure video chat; browse privately; and anonymize your activity through a VPN.
